A straightforward five minute drive from Causey Hill to the Waitrose on Alemouth Road is no bother when it’s time to stock up on provisions. It’s open 8am ‘til 8pm six days a week (and 10am to 4pm on Sundays) and provides more than just groceries, with cashpoint, foreign currency exchange and dry cleaning services also available. There is a large car park (including disabled parking) plus toilets. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Hexham General Hospital
Jusrt a six minute drive from Causey Hill, Hexham General Hospital has a range of general hospital facilities and services. These include an urgent treatment centre (open 8am-10pm), plus regular outpatient clinics. Wards at HGH include an oncology day unit, a surgical ward for patients who’ve had general, orthopaedic and gynaecological surgery, a stroke rehabilitation and care of the elderly ward, a general medicine ward and a midwifery-led maternity unit. Two GP practices are based within the hospital on Corbridge Road.

Alpin Dental
This practice in Hencotes is very close to Causey Hill, and is one of the longest established in the Hexham area. They offer a range of treatments for NHS, private and Denplan patients, and are open Monday to Friday 8.45 to 5.30 (4.30pm on Fridays, closed at weekends). In the case of an emergency (in or out of hours) ring the practice and you will be put in contact with a dentist.

Hadrian Vets
Hexham’s longest established vets is a six minute drive from Causey Hill. Hadrian Vets offers microchipping, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, dental care, dietary advice, neutering, ultrasound scans, nurse clinics, emergencies and end of life care. They can do home visits if required. The practice is open 9am – 6pm, Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays (closed on Sundays).

Hexham Library
Located on Beaumont Street, a short distance from Causey Hill, Hexham Library provides all of the expected library services alongside craft and cultural events and support groups (eg. book group, Ukrainian support group, knit and natter, chess club and poetry circle). Hexham Library is closed on Sundays, but open from 9am all other days (9.30am on Saturdays). It closes early evening each day.

Hexham Park
There are several public parks a mere mile from Causey Hill, close by each other in the centre of Hexham. Collectively known as Hexham Parks, the Sele, Hexham House grounds and the abbey grounds provide relaxing formal gardens for visitors to this wonderful market town to enjoy, including play areas, a bowling green, bandstand, war memorial and even a skate park. All of Hexham’s green spaces and parks have held Green Flag Award status, which recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, since 2002. Use town centre parking for easy access to the parks.

Hexham Abbey
Hexham Abbey is a Grade I listed church is s one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England, originally built in AD674, and improved over the centuries since. Entry is free for visitors, though a small fee grants access to the fascinating Roman Crypt. A peaceful and reflective space, the Abbey is filled with wonderful architecture including impressive 20th-century stained glass windows, alongside educational displays and historic artefacts. Still in active use as a church, there are regular services and many active parish groups, plus a strong musical tradition including choirs and concerts.

Belsay Hall
A mere 40 minute drive from Causey Hill, Belsay Hall, Castle and gardens offers an amazing blend of architectural grandeur, rich history and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy exploring a unique Greek Revival mansion and a medieval castle, plus approximately 40 acres of beautiful gardens. Entry is approximately £15 per adult, parking is free for English Heritage members (with a cash charge applying to non-members), the Tea Room offers hot and cold food and drinks, as does the Coach House café by the castle, there are baby changing facilities in the toilets, and dogs are allowed in the grounds (not in the hall or castle, though assistance dogs are welcome).

The Old Gaol
Hexham’s Old Gaol stands as England’s first purpose-built prison, constructed in 1333 using stone sourced from the Roman town of Corbridge, only three miles away. Visitors of all ages can step inside and experience the grim reality of medieval justice: test your bravery in the stocks, tour the prison house and uncover the harsh truths of crime and punishment in the Middle Ages. The Border Library Collection offers a rich archive of music, verse and literature exploring life on the Anglo-Scottish border. The Old Gaol is accessible (with a central lift providing access to all floors and rooms) and dog friendly, and is open 10am – 4pm Wednesday to Sunday with adult tickets priced at £8.

Falconry Days
Falconry Days trains and flies around 70 birds of prey, with an activity centre where birds are managed and flown on a daily basis. Visitors can enjoy a ‘meet the birds’ tour and even take part in a falconry experience, with a handling and flying session, and access to view the rest of the centre, or an owl experience, during which visitors can handle, fly and feed different types of owl from around the world. Photographers can enjoy privileged access for a day photographing hawks, owls, falcons, vultures and eagles, and the hunting experience is described as ‘the real deal day’, working with hawks, pointers and ferrets, witnessing them in action. Falconry Days is open seven days a week from February to October, and at weekends during November to March, with prices varying per experience you choose (must be booked in advance).

Hexham Racecourse
Hexham Racecourse is one of the UK’s most picturesque National Hunt venues. The left-handed track stretches approximately 1 mile 4 furlongs and presents a unique challenge due to its steep uphill finish. Stamina over speed is key on this course, which hosts 15 race meetings per year, including several weekend and evening fixtures.

The Forum
Lovers of the silver screen who are staying at Causey Hill will love The Forum! This 1930s cinema has served Hexham for 90 years and looks incredible, having retained its original and hugely attractive Art Deco styling. It’s a community enterprise, and as such avoids many of the pitfalls and restricted programmes of larger chain cinemas. The Forum is curated to include new and old films across all genres and countries. There are regular accessible screenings and performances, plus occasional guest speakers, live music performances, Q&A’s and discussions. The café bar has been refurbished and provides a relaxed and friendly environment.

The Heart Of Northumberland
This recently renovated historic pub just off the market place in Hexham is Grade II listed and provides the perfect place to relax, socialise and enjoy a pint with friends and family, including the dog. Food (including light bites, traditional pub grub, bar snacks, kids meals and Sunday roast) is served noon to 9pm, with an emphasis on locally sourced produce and Northumbrian tradition.
